Course Introduction

Applied Business Academy offers the Diploma in Education and Training (DET) programme. The Level 5 diploma extends into investigation and research into current practice theories, and models relating to education and training, as well as developing good teaching practice. The DET is an 'in-service' qualification designed for those who are working or are wishing to work as teachers/trainers in England.

What you will Study

Course Structure:

The DET is a minimum 120 credit programme consisting of for mandatory units and a combination of optional units.

Mandatory units:

  • Unit 1: "Teaching, Learning and Assessing in Education and Training' (20 Credits) Level 4
  • Unit 2: "Developing Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Education and Training' (20 Credits) Level 5
  • Unit 3: "Theories, Principles and Models in Education and Training' (20 Credits) Level 5
  • Unit 4: "Wider Professional Practice and Development in Education and Training' (15 Credits) Level 5
  • Optional Units: TBC : 6 Optional units (45 credit value)

DET Practice

As a trainee teacher, you will need to complete 100 teaching practice hours. Candidates will need to have these hours secured before starting the course.There will be a number of theories and strategies which you will have studied throughout the DET programme which you will implement during your practice, and you will be required to reflect on your practice every step of the way.

You will demonstrate your ability to plan and deliver lessons, and assess your students, and you will be asked to consider a range of initiatives whilst you do this.The theory which you learn in the DET programme will focus your practice in areas such as Equal Opportunities, Inclusive Learning and planning for assessment, as well as the teaching cycle, and you will very early on in the DET programme identify what your key roles and responsibilities will be in practice.In order to achieve your DET, you will complete a series of theoretical and practical tasks.

Our highly supportive and fully trained staff will guide you through the process, through focussed classroom activities, lectures and observation feedback.Knowledge in each unit will be assessed by the completion of written assignments. You will have access to the college's reference library, which stocks a number of texts from the recommended reading list.

In addition, whilst at ABA, you will have access to specific online support tools, and unlimited internet access.Your teaching practice will be assessed according to Ofsted guidelines and will be documented through session planning, observation reports and reflective journals.

Course Delivery Method

We use a blended approach to course delivery. As well as class based taught sessions, and one to one tutorial, each student will be engaged in group activities, individual research tasks, and will be encouraged to use a range of technology as well as traditional methods to meet the course criteria.

They will also be supported whilst on their teaching placement, to ensure that they are able to put the theory they are learning in class into practice, within a real work environment. Each is allocated their own tutor, who will guide their assessments, and provide continuous, tailored support and feedback. Our overall approach, whilst tutor led, is student centred.

Entry Requirements
  • Candidates must be 19+.
  • BTEC Level 3 qualification in a related subject area
  • GCE Advanced Level profile demonstrating strong performance in a relevant subject (likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C)
  • Other related Level 3 qualifications
  • Candidates wishing to undertake the det programme must be experienced or qualified in the subject area they wish to teach at the appropriate level.
  • Candidates must have access to 100 hours of teaching/training practice.
  • Additionally, due to the nature of both the theory and practical assessment which students need to achieve for the det, candidates will need good written and spoken English skills.
  • Candidates will also need to organise their work and supporting materials clearly
  • Literacy and Numeracy level 2. (Overseas students should demonstrate IELTS 6.5 or higher)
